Job,
Satan And Angels
(Job 1:1-5 NIV) In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom. Job was a contemporary of Moses and they may have actually known each other. If they had not met personally, they most certainly knew of each other. In the book of Jasher there was a man named Job who was at one time a counselor to the Pharaoh prior to the days of Moses. Whether or not this is the same person is uncertain. It is quite certain though that this Godly man named Job was the great great grandson of Abraham. Job obviously had Godly training in his youth being of such a family lineage. (Gen 35:23 KJV) The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun: (Gen 46:13 KJV) And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron. (Exo 6:16 NIV) These were the names of the sons of Levi according to their records: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Levi lived 137 years. (Exo 6:18 NIV) The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. Kohath lived 133 years. (Exo 6:20 NIV) Amram married his father's sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses. Amram lived 137 years. Job, according to the biblical geneology was a decendant of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, through Jacobs wife Leah and their son Issachar. Job was undoubtably brought up as a youth to know and serve the Lord, and it carried with him throughout his lifetime, to his great benefit in the long run. In the short run though, for a time, it looked to everyone as if he had served God in his lifetime for nothing, because he lost everything and even his wife turned against him and hoped he would die. So then the geneology of Job was Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Issachar, Job. The geneology of Moses was Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Levi, Kohath, Amram, Moses. Although Moses was two generations younger than Job, Job lived 140 years after his trial, and he already had 10 children and was a great man in the world when his trial started. Moses would have been born about the time or shortly after Job’s trial had ended. Moses lived 120 years so he and Job would have had at least 100 years of coexistence.
The
Methods And Workings Of Satan
While we are studying Job and angels we may as well look a little further into the methodology that the chief of the fallen angels, Satan, uses regularly against God’s people. Firstly he goes before God and brings an accusation against a person. then he gets permission from God to test the person. (Zec 3:1-2 NIV) Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?" God permits Satan’s accusation and testing for our good because if we pass the test our reward will be great someday in heaven, and usually shortly afterward on earth. So, it is for our advantage to undergo the testing of Satan for a season, because if we pass the test great blessings will be ours in this life and in the life to come (Job 1:6-8 NIV) One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil." (Job 1:9-12 NIV) "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied. "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face." The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. (Job 1:13-22 NIV) One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!" At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing. (Job 2:1-3 NIV) On another day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. And the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it." Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason." (Job 2:4-8 NIV) "Skin for skin!" Satan replied. "A man will give all he has for his own life. But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face." The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes. (Job 2:9-10 NIV) His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" He replied, "You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?" In all this, Job did not sin in what he said. Finally, after Job had suffered a long time he cursed the day of his birth, but he did not curse God or charge God with wrongdoing. (Job 3:1-26 NIV) After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. He said: "May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, 'A boy is born!' That day--may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine upon it. May darkness and deep shadow claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm its light. That night--may thick darkness seize it; may it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months. May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it. May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan. May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn, for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes. "Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb? Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed? For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins, with rulers who had gold, who filled their houses with silver. Or why was I not hidden in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day? There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest. Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver's shout. The small and the great are there, and the slave is freed from his master. "Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure, who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave? Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in? For sighing comes to me instead of food; my groans pour out like water. What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me. I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil." Job eventually did become depressed due to his situation, but even during all his troubles he never lost his faith. Job trusted God even as he was facing the possibility of a painful death. (Job 13:15-16 KJV) Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him. (Job 19:23-27 NIV) "Oh, that my words were recorded, that they were written on a scroll, that they were inscribed with an iron tool on lead, or engraved in rock forever! I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes--I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me! Job survived the test of Satan, the fallen angel, and no doubt the angels of God were cheering for Job invisibly during his whole ordeal. They were unable to help Job until the testing was complete because God had permitted Satan to test job to the limit Satan’s only restriction being to spare Job’s life. (Job 42:10-13 NIV) After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before. All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the LORD had brought upon him, and each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring. The LORD blessed the latter part of Job's life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters. (Job 42:14-15 NIV) The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers. (Job 42:16-17 NIV) After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. And so he died, old and full of years. Job passed his test and became one of the greatest examples of faith we have. His words were written in a book, just as he had wished for. In the book of the prophet Ezekiel God lists Job as one of the greatest heroes of faith of all time along with Noah and Daniel. (Ezek 14:14 NIV) even if these three men--Noah, Daniel and Job--were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign LORD. (Ezek 14:20 NIV) as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness. As we undergo trials in life lets try to remember the faith of Job and his great reward afterward. (Job 33:23 NIV) "Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, |
